WHY WAS THIS BOOK WRITTEN?
Mississippi railroad families traditionally have shared good times and bad times, with humor and compassion, and like all Mississippi folks they possess a hometown style of telling stories. THESE STORIES REWARD THE AUDIENCE (AND READERS) IN THE TELLING AND IN RETELLING. In our new book, the study of history is combined with some remarkable tales about early railroading.
----EXCERPTS----
Casey's Fireman - ICRR News, 1938 - On February 16 Fireman Sim Webb, who saved his life by jumping from the locomotive an instant before the celebrated wreck at Vaughan, MS, 38 years ago, rode the cab of the Panama Ltd. engine over his old run from Memphis to Canton, MS, and then told a radio audience of his experiences and feelings.  The program was "We The People" in a nationwide hookup on the evening of Feb. 17.  It was the second time Webb participated in a "We The People" event, the first proving so popular that his second appearance was on special invitation by the Sanka Coffee sponsors.
After studying the Brotherhood records concerning Casey Jones and the Vaughan wreck, Bruce Gurner of Water Valley combined this information with official ICRR reports, interviews with railroaders and his own experience gained during his years as fireman and engineer.  In 1972 Bruce Gurner published his account, the real story of the accident in which Casey Jones lost his life.  Look for this story in Chapter 10 of Mississippi Railroad Heritage.
